In the fall of 2017, I developed deep pain in my right arm above the elbow and occasional numbness in my hand. I met with several doctors who ruled out any serious damage but all of them confirmed it was tennis elbow, recommending nothing more than rest, a steroid shot and pain killers as needed. It was one doctor though had the courage to tell me the truth to my face. I had developed tennis elbow because I was overweight and out of shape. I needed strength training. There are lots of personal trainers in the area, but I knew I needed one with a sport medicine background.
After searching online, I found Nick at Peak Performance and came to see him in Oct 2017. I was seeing a physiotherapist at the time and worried I would have to wait until that was finished to start any strength training program, but Nick assured me that my training would complement the physio work. Under the coaching of Nick and Matt Lee, my elbow healed within a few weeks and my upper body strength improved significantly. Even my tennis group noticed the difference in my game! I was thrilled with the results and didn’t want to stop there.
I continued at Peak Performance for another 9 months but as the heat of summer approached, I chickened out and signed up with the new HIIT class studio closer to home. The classes were fine for a while, but they offered limited weight work and so soon I found my overall strength declining.
Any evidence of my hard work was quickly disappearing! It wasn’t long before I went back to see Nick and was surprised to learn the gym was now CrossFit Anavah. CrossFit?! There’s no way I could do that! I was seriously reluctant to sign up thinking all the stereotypical things people hear about it but Nick encourage me to have a leap of faith that I could do it.
Fast forward 15 months and I’m not only the strongest I’ve been in my life, I’m part of a wonderful community of friends that encourage and motivate each other every day. I am so grateful for that doctor for telling me the truth I needed to hear, for Nick for helping me to take the leap and just show up, and for the Anavah community for their positivity, kinship, and endless support.
